Being right in the middle of
the crowd was a powerful experience. Several people came up to us
urging us to protect them from the police, who they said had been
"roughing people up" earlier on. I don't know what exactly they
thought we could do. We were really just there to show support. One
young woman told us her friend had been hit in the knees by a cop, and
was still marching. We offered them a ride, but she was afraid she
wouldn't be able to start walking again if she stopped. Tough kids.
