Eliza is an early AI program designed to mimic the conversational style of a psychotherapist in a therapy session. She's surprisingly good at drawing out people's hopes, fears, and insecurities when they don't know she's a program. But her algorithm becomes quite transparent when you put her in a conversation with herself:
ELIZA: I am the psychotherapist. Please, describe your problems. Each time you are finished talking, type RET twice.
ELIZA: Why do you say that?
ELIZA: Is it because do I say that that you came to me?
ELIZA: Does it bother you that do you say that that I came to you?
ELIZA: When did you first know that do I say that that you came to me?
ELIZA: What happened when did me first know that do you say that that I came to you?
ELIZA: What would happen if did you first know that do I say that that you came to me?
ELIZA: Is the fact that do you say that that I came to you the real reason?
ELIZA: Does the fact that do I say that that you came to me the real reason explain anything else?
ELIZA: Are you sure do you say that that I came to you the real reason explain anything else?
ELIZA: Is it because that you came to me the real reason explain anything else that you came to me?
ELIZA: Are you annoyed that that I came to you the real reason explain anything else that I came to you?
ELIZA: Have you been annoyed often?
ELIZA: What causes you to be annoyed?
ELIZA: What makes you believe you are annoyed?
ELIZA: Have you been annoyed often?
(and so on, ad infinitum...)
